Surely you can't be serious? I am serious, and don't call me Shirley

Brand New Shoes...

In my neck of the woods, when you sign up for a race, you buy the shoes, train outside, get your ribbon cutting skills polished, show up early, eat a good breakfast, get your adrenaline pumping...to race! Not to ski, or to drive, or to sit around and paint nails...but to RACE.

Why then do people sign up for a race, buy the shoes, train outside, get their ribbon cutting skills polished, show up early, eat a good breakfast, get their adrenaline pumping...and then give up the prize?

Grasp hands slowly around nothing.
Wipe that victorious smile of self-satisfaction off your face.
Look down at those running shoes, so smug in their newness...

Humanity is strangely fascinating. We pick something out that we want to do, do everything to prepare for it, and then realize that we don't actually want the prize.

Next time, I'd wish you would have figured out you didn't want to race before you signed up for me, bought me running shoes, trained outside with me, polished my ribbon cutting skills, showed up with me early, ate my good breakfast, and got my adrenaline pumping...
